When to Book Your Colorado Maternity Shoot Photos
If you’re expecting, you’ve probably thought about the perfect timing for your maternity shoot photos. As a Denver maternity photographer, I know this is something many mamas consider — your bump is constantly changing, your comfort shifts week by week, and you want photos that feel both beautiful and authentic. To give you an example of how timing and preparation come together, I want to share Tori & Matt’s studio maternity shoot at Denver Photo Collective. Their session shows how thoughtful planning and a simple, elegant studio setup can create maternity shoot photos that feel timeless and full of connection.
Why Timing Matters for Maternity Shoot Photos
Your maternity photos aren’t just about the bump. They’re about your glow, the little moments you share with your partner, and that sweet, exciting anticipation of meeting your baby. These photos capture all the love, joy, and quiet magic of this chapter.. the kind of moments you’ll want to look back on and feel again and again.
The timing you choose affects:
Bump size + shape — big enough to show, but not so late that you’re uncomfortable.
Energy levels — you want to feel relaxed and able to move with ease.
Scheduling flexibility — babies don’t always follow the calendar, so planning ahead helps.
Overall comfort — swelling, fatigue, and limited movement can affect how you feel during photos.
Getting that balance right makes your session both fun and comfortable.
The Sweet Spot: When to Take Maternity Photos
Most photographers recommend booking your maternity shoot photos between 28–36 weeks. The sweet spot is usually 30–34 weeks — your bump is perfectly rounded, and you’re likely still comfy enough for outfit changes and posing.
Every pregnancy is different, though! Some mamas show earlier, others later, and that’s totally okay. If you schedule a bit earlier, before 28 weeks, your bump might not be super pronounced, but we can still capture all the connection, anticipation, and glow of this special time. On the other end, after 36 weeks, you might feel tired, swollen, or a little less mobile, but we’ll slow things down, take breaks, and make sure everything feels comfortable and natural.
The most important thing is that this session is all about you! It’s about celebrating your bump, soaking in that pregnancy glow, and capturing this incredible moment with your partner in a way that feels real, beautiful, and totally you.
Booking vs. Shooting Your Session
You don’t want to wait until the last minute to book! Many mamas reach out in their second trimester to lock in a spot on my calendar. Once we know your due date, we’ll schedule the shoot within that 28–36 week window! Booking early ensures you have plenty of options, especially during busy seasons (like spring, fall or the holidays) so you can secure the time that works best for you and feel relaxed leading up to your session.
Why Choose a Studio Maternity Photoshoot?
Outdoor maternity photos are gorgeous, but there are so many benefits to going with a studio like Denver Photo Collective:
Controlled lighting: no worrying about rain, harsh sun, or unpredictable Colorado weather.
Clean, minimal backdrops: your bump and your emotion are the focus.
Comfortable environment: easy outfit changes, temperature control, and cozy spaces.
Styling flexibility: bring gowns, casual looks, or something in between.
Intimate vibe: cozy, cinematic, and distraction-free.
Studios are especially wonderful in winter, spring (mud season!), or late pregnancy when you just want a calm, private space.
Tori & Matt’s Denver Maternity Shoot Photos
Tori & Matt’s session at Denver Photo Collective was such a dreamy example of how simple, classic styling paired with a thoughtfully designed space can make maternity photos feel timeless. They kept it easy and beautiful with white button-downs and denim jeans — a classic combo that always looks clean and coordinated.
To add a touch of personality, we included a colorful bouquet of flowers against the studio’s crisp white background. That pop of color brought just the right amount of vibrance while keeping the focus on them.
We also used the studio’s gorgeous green built-ins and bed setup, which added variety and dimension to their session. The end result was a gallery of images that feels classic, intimate, and full of love and connection.
What to Wear for Your Maternity Session
Not sure what to wear for your maternity session? Don’t worry. I always recommend outfits that make you feel confident and highlight your beautiful bump. Flowy dresses or gowns are a favorite because they create movement and photograph beautifully. Fitted knits or bodysuits offer a simple, modern look that shows off your shape in a clean, minimalist way. For a more casual vibe, classic pieces like button-downs and denim work perfectly, especially in a studio setting. Footwear should stay neutral or go barefoot to keep the focus on you, and adding a prop, like flowers, baby shoes, or a cozy blanket, is completely optional but can add a sweet, personal touch. The most important thing is to choose something comfortable that makes you feel radiant and like yourself.
