If you’re dreaming of fall engagement photos with epic Colorado backdrops, you’re in for a treat! Just outside Denver, there are so many gorgeous locations with mountain views, alpine lakes, and golden fall colors—especially magical in late September through early October. In this post, I’ll cover all the best spots, when to catch the peak fall colors, permit details, and some helpful rules to keep in mind. Let’s make sure your Colorado engagement session is unforgettable, seamless, and filled with all the best the Rockies have to offer!
Best Colorado Locations for Fall Engagement Photos
Fall colors in Colorado are fleeting but so stunning! For the best timing, it’s all about catching each area’s peak before the season shifts.
Brainard Lake: Typically shines in late September, giving you that vibrant alpine foliage.
Golden Gate Canyon: Follows in early October with rich hues.
Roxborough State Park: Holds onto its colors until late October, perfect for those wanting a later fall session.
Maroon Bells (near Aspen): Known for its iconic peaks and vibrant autumn aspen trees, Maroon Bells typically peaks in late September.
Estes Park: With stunning backdrops near Rocky Mountain National Park, it offers beautiful fall colors in early October.
Kebler Pass (near Crested Butte): Home to one of the largest aspen groves, Kebler Pass is STUNNING in early to mid-October.
Boreas Pass (near Breckenridge): High-altitude views with golden aspen groves! Best around early October for prime colors.
Keep in mind, Colorado’s fall colors can disappear quickly, especially if early snow hits—so planning your fall engagement photos carefully is key for those golden shots!
Permit Requirements
Each of these Colorado locations has unique permit requirements to keep in mind before planning your session. Brainard Lake requires a photography permit because it’s a popular scenic area with regulated access to preserve the environment. Golden Gate Canyon State Park also requires a permit, which helps manage visitor traffic and maintain the area’s natural beauty. Roxborough State Park is a bit stricter, needing both a photography permit and specific approval for professional sessions, given its sensitive ecosystem.
Maroon Bells also requires a permit due to its popularity, especially during peak foliage season. Estes Park, with its proximity to Rocky Mountain National Park, may require a special use permit depending on where you're shooting, so it's important to check with local authorities. Kebler Pass also typically needs a permit for professional photographers, especially during the fall rush. And lastly, Boreas Pass requires a permit for professional shoots as well.
Be sure to check for any road closures or access restrictions during the fall months, plus the latest requirements as each area’s rules can vary and change seasonally.
Timing is Everything for Fall Engagement Photos
Choosing a location for your fall engagement photos with the exact colors you want on the date you want can be tricky because fall colors shift quickly and vary from place to place—even week by week. That’s why it’s so important to book your session well in advance if you’re aiming for those beautiful fall tones. In fact, fall is the first season to book up entirely! Lexi & Cal (white dress featured in the blog!) reserved their session about six months ahead at the same time they booked me for their wedding, so we had prime time for fall colors in a location that worked for all of us—and honestly, Golden Gate Canyon State Park is my favorite for fall foliage near Denver.
Lighting Changes Throughout the Day
Another helpful tip for planning your engagement session in Colorado is to consider the time of day for your shoot. Early mornings or late afternoons are ideal because they provide that gorgeous, soft golden light for your photos. Sunrise sessions are great for privacy if you’re hoping to avoid crowds, especially in popular spots. Meanwhile, sunset sessions bring warm, glowing tones that work beautifully with fall colors. (This time is my personal favorite!) Checking sunrise and sunset times in advance will help you pick the best time for your vision!
Fall Engagement Photos Outfits
For a stunning Colorado engagement session, the right outfits can make all the difference! Since fall colors are already vibrant, try wearing neutral or earthy tones to complement the natural landscape without clashing. Layers are not only practical (Colorado weather can change quickly!) but add dimension and warmth to your photos. Think cozy sweaters, scarves, or light jackets. If you’re looking for elegance, long, flowy dresses for a bit of movement look gorgeous against the mountain scenery, while plaid or textured fabrics can bring a more rustic vibe!
Another key outfit tip is to keep the weather in mind, as Colorado’s fall can be unpredictable! From quick temperature drops to sudden snow, it’s essential to check the forecast a day or two before your session and come prepared. Layering is a great option for staying warm, especially at higher altitudes. Bringing cozy accessories like scarves or jackets that match your outfits can add a stylish touch to your photos and help you stay comfortable. Plus, having a backup plan for weather changes will ensure your session goes smoothly no matter what!
